The Air Support Unit selects the very best officers for assignment to ASU. The Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) receives 40 hours of in-house training which includes:

· Introduction to Air Support—Mission, History and Goals

· Air Law and Procedures

· Basic Theory of Flight

· Weather Awareness Training

· Communication Management

· Aerial Patrol Techniques

· Basic Infra Red Theory

· Time/Distance—Traffic Enforcement

· Underwater Egress Training

· Practical demonstrations and instruction on equipment and operations.

The Air Support Unit has ongoing training for Tactical Flight Officers as well as proficiency check rides for on a regular basis.
