Drugs and Vice Unit
The 33 members of the Drugs and Vice Unit investigate the production and manufacturing of controlled drugs and substances as well as prescription drug fraud, prostitution and adult entertainment offences, liquor licence offences and gambling and gaming offences.
In 2011 the Drugs and Vice Unit charged 27 offdenders with Living Off the Avails of Prostitution, eight of which were also charged with Human Trafficking. Additionally, they dismantaled 39 indoor marihuana grow-ops, seized over $14 million worth of marihuana plants and charged 114 persons with 245 criminal charges.
In 2011 the Drugs and Vice Unit also partnered with the Toronto Police Service Drug Squad, the Peel Regional Police Service Major Drugs and Vice Unit and the Canada Border Services Agency in an opium importation investigation named Project Khiar. The investigation resulted in the seizure of approximately 164 kilograms of opium with an estimated street value of $11 million and approximately 44 kilograms of ephedrine, which is a precursor for producing crystal methamphetamine. Eight individuals were arrested.
The Drugs and Vice Unit also partnered with the Durham Regional Police Service Drug Unit in a drug-trafficking investigation named Project Gladiator. Project Gladiator resulted in the execution of 41 search warrants, which led to the seizure of 77 kilograms of marihuana, five kilograms of cocaine, two kilograms of methamphetamine and $400,000 in cash. Officers arrested 30 people who are charged with more than 100 offences.
