York Regional Police accepts applications from candidates who have served with Canadian police agencies. The candidate must have completed a period of probation, pursuant to Section 44.1 of the Police Services Act. 

Experienced Officers from Ontario

An experienced officer who has graduated from the Ontario Police College is exempt from recruit training. 

From Outside of Ontario

An experienced officer who has completed a Canadian police recruit training program comparable to the Ontario Police College program, and approved by the Ontario Police College, must write an Ontario Police College exemption exam. A candidate must have entered the selection process in order to write the exam and must obtain a passing grade to be considered at York Regional Police. 

The exemption exam is based on provincial law, Use of Force and the Highway Traffic Act.

International Applicants

York Regional Police proudly accepts applications for the police constable position from applicants residing outside of Canada. International applicants must meet the same criteria as Canadian applicants.

Approved Police Recruit Training Programs

Graduates from the following Ontario Police College-approved programs are eligible to write the exemption exam:

  • Atlantic Police Academy
  • British Columbia Justice Institute
  • Calgary Police Service
  • Ecole Nationale de Police du Quebec
  • Edmonton Police Service
  • Royal Canadian Mounted Police Depot
  • Saskatchewan Police College
  • Winnipeg Police Service

All other experienced officers must complete the Ontario Police College recruit program.

Application Documents

Candidates should refer to the Mandatory Documents Checklist to ensure their application package is complete, with all necessary documents included. 

Additional Mandatory Documents

Applications received without all mandatory documents will not be considered for employment:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • Copy of driver's licence
  • Copy of birth certificate 
  • Secondary school diploma and transcript
  • Post-secondary diploma/degree and transcript
  • Documentation of any continued education
  • First Aid/CPR Level C
  • Ontario Police College transcript, or equivalent (i.e. Atlantic Police Academy)
  • Proof of current fitness test i.e. PIN, PARE, POPAT, PREP 
  • Course certificates
  • List of references, both personal and professional, with letters
  • Any letters of commendation
  • Performance evaluations
  • Immigration documents, if applicable
  • List of volunteer work

After submitting all mandatory documents, experienced officer candidates will receive confirmation of receipt. Application packages remain on file until the end of the calendar year. Candidates are notified before York Regional Police contacts his or her current police service.

Interview

When a class of experienced officers is confirmed, members of the Uniform Recruiting Unit review applications and schedule interviews with potential candidates. Following the interview phase, the most qualified candidates move onto the background investigation phase. 

Police Background Investigation

Applicants successful in the interview phase may be subject to a comprehensive police background investigation. The background investigation will include the verification of information provided by the applicant, as well as any additional information received from the applicant during the selection process.

Psychological Evaluation

All experienced police constable applicants are required to complete a written psychological test to assess an applicant's suitability. The results of the psychologist's assessment are confidential.

At the completion of the background investigation, the candidate may be recommended for employment with York Regional Police.

Conditional Offer

If approved, the candidate's name will be forwarded to the Police Services Board for final approval. An offer of employment will then be made to the candidate, subject to the successful completion of a medical examination by an approved physician. 

Conditions of Employment for Experienced Officers

Annual Leave
New officers, recruits and experienced, are entitled to one working day (eight hours) for each full month of service during the first year of employment, up to a maximum of 10 working days (80 hours).
Assignment
Officers are assigned to a district and platoon based on the needs of the service. The service will attempt to accommodate a member's request for a particular posting; however, there is no guarantee that the request can be met. New members should be prepared to report to any of the operating police districts within York Region.
Benefits
Members begin receiving benefits on the first day of employment.
Classification
Experienced officers are credited with  their previous police experience when determining their original classification as a member of York Regional Police. The classification for each experienced officer is determined on a case by case basis. If an officer worked for more than one agency, the service from each agency is cumulative.
Education
Members taking courses related or beneficial to York Regional Police can apply to the Police Services Board for 80 per cent reimbursement of costs incurred.
Pension Plan
It is compulsory for all York Regional Police members to contribute to the OMERS pension plan. Experienced officers who have contributed to another pension plan must contact OMERS to determine if their plan is transferable.
Seniority
Seniority is determined by the date that a member is sworn in as a York Regional Police Constable. There is no consideration given to service with other police agencies.
