Filing a Freedom of Information Request

Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, individuals can request access to any record held by government institutions, including a local police service. Requests for copies of all police reports (excluding motor vehicle collision reports and proof of loss reports, which are available through our Customer Service Unit) and any other type of police record that may must be made through the York Regional Police, Freedom of Information Unit. All requests made through this unit are responded to in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This unit will ensure that all federal and provincial laws are upheld when the service provides information to the general public. For example, some requests for police reports or other records contain the personal information of others and therefore can only be released with the consent of those individuals.

In order to make a request, you may attend at the York Regional Police Headquarters reception area, located at 17250 Yonge Street, Newmarket, and fill out a request form. You will be required to pay the legislated $5 application fee at that time. Please note you will be asked to provide photo identification at the time your request is made. We can only accept cash (exact change) or cheque/ money order made payable to York Regional Police.

You may also make your request in writing by filling out the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act access form and mail it to:

When mailing your request form, please be sure to include a cheque or money order payable to York Regional Police in the amount of $5.  You must also include a photocopy of one piece of government issued photo identification with your request.

If your request is for personal information, it may be subject to 20 cents per page photocopying charges above the $5 application fee. If your request is for general information, it may be subject to $30 per hour search time and $30 per hour preparation time and 20 cents per page photocopying charges above the application fee. York Regional Police also has set fees for certain records including video/audio statements, 9-1-1 calls and photographs.

Please note that you will be advised of any additional fees that may also apply to your request.
Under the Municipal Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act, the Freedom of Information Unit has 30 days to respond to your request.
