Safety programs

Project Lifesaver

The York Regional Police Project Lifesaver program combines radio technology with a co-ordinated police response to locate wandering and disoriented loved ones due to Alzheimer's, autism or other conditions or disorders.

Vulnerable Person Registry

The Vulnerable Person Registry allows an improved police response to vulnerable people who may require emergency assistance due to their condition. It expedites the process of locating and assisting vulnerable residents or frequent visitors to York Region by making essential personal information readily available to responding officers.

Senior Safety Team

York Regional Police has dedicated senior safety officers who work closely with trained social workers to ensure the well-being of seniors in York Region through crime prevention, education and personal safety awareness. These members provide crime prevention sessions, in-service training and visit seniors in their homes, in addition to hosting Seniors Academy and Seniors Day events.

Crime prevention sessions

Senior safety officers provide free presentations on personal safety, safety at home and on the Internet, fraud and scam awareness and elder abuse.

In-service training

Senior safety officers provide free presentations to staff at retirement and long-term care facilities and other organizations regarding policing issues and the well-being of seniors in their care.

Home visits

After a referral from fellow police officers, community partners, social workers or residents, members of the Senior Safety Team will visit seniors in their homes. These visits are invaluable for seniors coping with mental or physical health issues, seniors victimized by crime or those wanting more information on personal safety.

During home visits, members of York Regional Police will refer seniors to appropriate community support agencies, address safety concerns and teach seniors how to increase their own safety and prevent crime. Issues include:

  • Personal safety
  • Internet and home safety
  • Fraud/scam awareness
  • Crime prevention
  • Elder abuse

Seniors Academy

Seniors Academy is a free program hosted in spring and fall that teaches seniors about crime prevention and personal safety. Over the course of four two-hour sessions, seniors participate in workshops delivered by guest presenters on a wide variety of topics.

Seniors Day

Seniors Day is a free event hosted in June allowing seniors to meet and learn from various community partners in one convenient setting. As an added bonus, lunch is provided free of charge.

Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE)

The Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE) is a community based legal clinic for low income senior citizens. ACE provides direct legal services to low-income seniors, public legal education, and engages in law reform activities.

Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario

Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario collaborates to promote public awareness, deliver education programs and activities, develop resources and enhance awareness of local supports, services and available program that help older adults who are at-risk or experiencing abuse within their communities.

Additionally, the organization offers a seniors safety line to provide 24-hour crisis and support for seniors.
