Project Title is Project Takeover

Joint-forces operation

In 2020, police services across the Greater Toronto Area saw an uptick in street racing and stunt driving. This included dangerous and disruptive intersection takeovers, stunt demonstrations and races. These were not random incidents. Instead, they were highly organized events that were heavily publicized on social media.

To address this growing concern, York Regional Police partnered with Peel Regional Police, Toronto Police and the Ontario Provincial Police to launch Project Takeover.

This joint-force operation used an investigative approach to dismantle the groups organizing these events and disrupt their illegal activities through covert and overt surveillance, including the York Regional Police helicopter Air2.

Ultimately, Project takeover resulted in:

  • 70 arrests
  • A total of 346 charges, including 67 criminal charges and 279 Highway Traffic Act charges
  • 61 vehicles impounded
  • 57 drivers' licence suspensions

Together with our partners, York Regional Police is committed to holding drivers who engage dangerous behaviors accountable for their actions in order to prevent further fatalities and injuries on our roadways.
