Leadership in Social Justice Scholarship

York Regional Police in partnership with its Police Community Advisory Council are launching the first annual Leadership in Social Justice Scholarship to recognize students who have promoted equity and inclusion within their school and community.

Ten students representing municipalities across the region will be awarded $500 each for their post-secondary education. One of scholarships will be awarded to an Indigenous student.

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Candidate must be a York Region resident and graduating from a York Region secondary school in June 2019.
  2. Candidate must have applied to attend a post-secondary institution as a full-time student beginning in September 2019 or January 2020.
  3. Candidate must have demonstrated leadership towards the goals of equity, inclusion and social justice in one of the following areas: ability, age, culture, gender, gender identity, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status.
  4. Candidate must also display continued success in their academic studies, attendance and school involvement.
  5. Candidate must submit a one to two page written statement that describes their motivations in working to achieve equity, inclusion and/or social justice goals.
  6. Candidate must list any extra-curricular contributions made throughout their years as a secondary school student.
  7. Candidate must list any significant contributions made to the community throughout their years as a secondary school student.
  8. Candidate must submit one recommendation letter from a school staff member and one letter of character reference from a community member.
  9. Candidate will consent to the release of their high school transcripts to support this application.
  10. Candidate will consent to the publication of their name and image by the York Regional Police, if selected as a scholarship recipient.
