Officer reviewing vehicle damage

When to Call Police to Attend Your Motor Vehicle Collision

Call police immediately if the collision involves:

  • Danger to motorists at the scene of the collision
  • Personal injury
  • Any criminal activity, such as impaired driving or stolen vehicles
  • A government vehicle of any kind
  • A vehicle which is transporting dangerous goods
  • Damage to third-party property, such as a parked car
  • Damage to private, municipal or highway property
  • A pedestrian or cyclist
  • An uncooperative driver

When to Attend the Collision Reporting Centre

You can attend the Collision Reporting Centre, located at the Community Resource Centre in Richmond Hill if:

  • Your collision occurred in Markham, Richmond Hill or Vaughan
  • No injuries occurred
  • No apparent criminal activity took place
  • No damage to private, municipal or federal property occurred
  • No dangerous goods are involved

If your collision occurs in another municipality, contact York Regional Police to have an officer attend. The Highway Traffic Act requires all collisions must be reported to police if injuries are involved, if property damage apparently exceeds $2,000, or if there is damage to private, municipal or highway property.

Any person involved in a collision, who fails to attend the CRC when directed by a police officer or when otherwise required by law, is guilty of an offence.
