Two e-scooters are on the sidewalk.

York Region residents have probably noticed the increased use of e-scooters and e-bikes in their community. These modes of transportation are becoming more common on roads, sidewalks and trails across the region.

As their use continues to grow, it is important for riders and families to understand the rules that apply to each and the safety responsibilities that come with using them. We are reminding residents of the rules regarding each mode of transportation.

E-Bikes

Riders must:

  • Be at least 16 years or older to operate
  • Wear a bicycle or motorcycle helmet
  • Follow the same rules of the road as other cyclists

Do not:

  • Remove the pedals. Doing so makes the e-bike a motor vehicle, which requires a licence, insurance and registration to operate.
  • Modify your e-bike's electric motor to increase the assisted speed of the bike
  • Exceed an assisted speed of 32 km/h

E-Scooters

Riders must:

  • Be at least 16 years or older to operate
  • Remain standing while riding
  • Wear a bicycle helmet if you are under 18

Do not:

  • Carry passengers or cargo
  • Ride an e-scooter on controlled access highways (i.e. 400-series highways, QEW)
  • Exceed a speed of 24 km/h on a level surface

Before you buy an e-bike or e-scooter for your child, grandchild or loved one, consider the dangers that exist when they are used improperly or without supervision. We all need to play a part in reinforcing the rules and making sure these e-vehicles are used safely. By working together, we can help prevent injuries and keep our communities safer for everyone.
