Text with 9-1-1 (T9-1-1)
York Regional Police introduced T9-1-1 to improve access to emergency services for the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired (DHHSI) community. Once registered, users can dial 9-1-1 and a text conversation will be initiated with a call taker.
Eligibility & Requirements
Membership in the DHHSI community
This service is intended for individuals who are deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired (DHHSI). It provides an accessible way to contact emergency services when speaking on the phone is not possible or practical.
Compatible mobile device with texting capability
You need a mobile device that supports sending and receiving text messages. This functionality is required so you can communicate with a 9-1-1 call taker during an emergency using text messaging.
Registration with your wireless service provider
You must register for Text with 9-1-1 (T9-1-1) through your wireless service provider before the service can be used. Registration confirms your eligibility and ensures your device and phone number are recognized by emergency call centres when you dial 9-1-1.
Using T9-1-1 in an Emergency
- Clearly state the nature of the emergency in your first message
- Provide your exact location as soon as possible
- Keep messages brief and direct
- Avoid abbreviations or slang to ensure clarity
- Respond promptly to questions from the call taker
Important Notes
- T9-1-1 is an emergency-only service
- Message delivery is not guaranteed due to limitations of text messaging
- Location may be approximated; always confirm your exact location
- Do not test the service by calling 9-1-1
- If messages fail, resend your text
