Our StoryCommunity Safety Village ribbon-cutting
In 1998, former Chief Donald Hillock envisioned a safe, controlled environment where school-aged children could learn how to remain safe while walking, biking and crossing streets as well as protecting themselves against all kinds of dangers. Our community partners and citizens embraced this dream to create a Community Safety Village in York Region for all members of the community. Committed individuals along with staff from York Regional Police and Regional Council formed a volunteer board and the journey commenced.

Over the next seven years, this group worked tirelessly with determination and devotion to plan, develop, fundraise and build this exciting project. They successfully raised over 3.3. million dollars from the beginning through to completion and with the support of our champions, Beverly Thompson, Host of Canada AM and our Celebrity Spokesperson, and Honourary Chairman Wendel Clark, former Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Safety Village was officially opened on May 14th, 2005.

The Community Safety Village welcomes approximately 270 children daily from September to June and hosts day camps as well as offering five weeks of summer camp each year. We also host several special events throughout the year. To date, we have welcomed over 200,000 people to the Village.
