Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, individuals can request access to any record held by government institutions, including York Regional Police. Requests for copies of police reports - excluding motor vehicle collision reports and proof of loss reports, which are available through the Customer Service Unit - must be made through the Freedom of Information Unit.
The Freedom of Information Unit ensures all federal and provincial laws are upheld when information is provided to members of the public. For example a request for a police report that contains the personal information of others can only be released with the consent of those individuals.
Fee updates will apply to various services offered by York Regional Police. See how information accessible through Freedom of Information requests are affected by the new service fees.
