The Proud Past of York Regional Police
On January 1, 1971, 14 Municipal Police Departments and the York County
Security Police were amalgamated to form a new Regional Police service.
Although York Regional Police is relatively new, we continue a tradition of police service that spans more than two hundred years.
Our motto, DEEDS SPEAK, is interpreted to mean “Actions Speak Louder Than Words” and serves as an appropriate bridge between a proud past and a bright future. The motto was coined during the War of 1812 by the 3rd York Militia Regiment, in which many of the Home District Constables served. The Home District included today’s York Region, and as such, these constables were the forerunners of our modern day police. DEEDS SPEAK must always serve as the foundation to all our endeavours.
Since 1971, the Region has grown at an unprecedented rate and today, the communities of York Region are served by more than 1,364 full-time police professionals and approximately 496 support staff. The basic principle of helping your neighbour, however, has endured. York Regional Police is proud to continue this tradition and is committed to remain sensitive to the constantly changing needs of the community.
