A message from York Regional Police

This message is intended for those persons who were charged with a criminal offence by York Regional Police and who represented themselves in a criminal court proceeding at 50 Eagle Street, Newmarket, between the dates of October 1, 2014 and June 28, 2021.

During this period, York Regional Police recorded police communications during intelligence gathering and surveillance operations. However, the officers involved in these operations may have not been aware they were being recorded.

As a result, the recordings that a self-represented person would have been entitled to as part of the disclosure process may not have been included in the investigative file disclosed to persons representing themselves.

If a person who represented themselves during the above-noted time period believes there may have been undisclosed radio transmissions related to their specific charge, they can apply to York Regional Police directly at radiotransmissions@yrp.ca to commence a disclosure review process. It is recommended that as much information as possible be included in this email, such as the name of the accused or co-accused persons, the date the arrest, and the name (if known) of the officer-in-charge of the case.

If York Regional Police determines that recordings were made on a file, they will advise the Crown Attorney’s Office or the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, who will then determine if further disclosure to self-represented persons is required.

Once the review has been completed, the person who applied for the review will be notified by York Regional Police of the outcome and any necessary next steps.
