What should be reported?

York Regional Police only accepts reports of lost property with the hope of returning items to their rightful owners. Still, if you have lost your accessible parking permitgovernment-issued piece of identification or licence plate, it is important to report the lost property to the appropriate institution as soon as possible.

Similarly, if you've lost a bank card, it is important to report the missing card to your bank immediately to help deter crime. 

If your property was stolen, rather than misplaced or left behind somewhere, please file a theft, or theft from a vehicle report.

If your accessible parking permit has been stolen from your vehicle in York Region, call the non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423, or attend the police district in which the theft occurred to report the stolen permit.

Government-Issued Documents

Have you lost a piece of government-issued identification, or immigration documentation? Report it to the appropriate institution as soon as possible to prevent identity theft. 

Birth Certificates, Driver's Licences, Health Cards, etc.

In Ontario, most pieces of identification, such as birth certificates, driver's licences, health cards etc., are issued by the provincial government. Lost pieces of provincially issued identification should be reported to ServiceOntario

If your identification, immigration documents or other government-issued documentation was lost or stolen in York Region, you should also complete a Lost or Stolen Official Document Form and bring it to York Regional Police at your nearest police district.

Passports

Lost Canadian passports should be reported to Service Canada. If your passport was stolen in York Region, you should complete a Stolen Passport Form and bring it to York Regional Police at your nearest police district.

Social Insurance Number (SIN) Cards

Lost or stolen SIN cards should be reported to Service Canada. Service Canada will only issue a new SIN if your current SIN is being used fraudulently.

Before reporting lost property to police, consider contacting friends, family members, business owners, employees etc. who may have been present when your property was lost, or may otherwise know the whereabouts of your lost property.
