Every York Regional Police special constable plays an important role in realizing our vision of ensuring our citizens feel safe and secure through excellence in policing.

There are three types of special constables:

Special Constables (Community Support)

They enhance public safety by supporting frontline police operations and maintaining a visible community presence. The role includes traffic control, scene security, property handling, and report writing.

Special Constables (Forensic Identification Specialists)

They collect, preserve, and analyze evidence to support investigations and court proceedings. They provide expert guidance on fingerprints, DNA, and crime scene analysis while maintaining chain-of-custody and testifying in court as needed.

 Special Constables (Courts)

They ensure the safety and security of persons in custody and all court facility occupants in the Region of York. The role includes prisoner control and transportation, courtroom security, emergency response, and legislated identification processing such as photographing, fingerprinting, and DNA collection.
