Vacations can often be an invitation for thieves to enter your home. Here are some simple to tips to help prevent you from becoming a victim of a break and enter.

  • Don't publicize you will be away on social media accounts. It announces no one is home. Post pictures when you get back
  • Have mail, newspapers, etc., picked up or suspend them when you are away
  • Have your lawn cut, garden weeded or snow shovelled
  • Install timers for the lights, and a radio or TV, so it appears someone is home.
  • Disable the garage door opener
  • Inform trusted neighbours or relatives of your vacation plans and where you can be reached
  • Leave a key with them so they can check your house
  • If you come home and see a door ajar or a window broken, call the police immediately. NEVER enter the dwelling. If it looks suspicious -- don't hesitate -- call police
