Victim Identified and Appeal for Witnesses in Vaughan Homicide

Posted on Wednesday January 28, 2026

Investigators with the York Regional Police Homicide Unit are appealing for witnesses following a homicide in the City of Vaughan.

On Monday, January 26, 2026, at 1:08 p.m., officers attended a commercial plaza in the area of Winges and Rowntree Dairy roads for multiple reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, a male was located in front of a business with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

As officers were on scene for the shooting, a call came in regarding a vehicle on fire on Kipling Avenue, north of Woodbridge Avenue. The vehicle, described as a black sports utility vehicle (SUV), matched the description of a suspect vehicle that fled following the shooting. Investigators have confirmed the vehicle on fire was the same vehicle from the shooting. At the time of the fire, the vehicle was unoccupied and no injuries were reported.

On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the office of the Chief Coroner identified the homicide victim as Sergio LOPES, 65, of the City of Richmond Hill.

The cause of death was determined to be a result of gunshot wounds.

Investigators are treating this as a targeted incident.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, or anyone who may have security video from the area is asked to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Homicide Unit by calling 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865, or email the Homicide Unit at homicide@yrp.ca. Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS or visiting www.1800222tips.com.
