Overview

Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, individuals can request access to any record held by government institutions, including York Regional Police. Requests for copies of police reports must be made through the Freedom of Information Unit, excluding motor vehicle collision and proof of loss reports.

The Freedom of Information Unit ensures all federal and provincial laws are upheld when information is provided to members of the public. For example, a request for a police report that contains the personal information of others can only be released with the consent of those individuals.

York Regional Police retains records pursuant to our Police Services Board's Records Management Policy and the Regional Municipality of York's Bylaw No. 2019-04. Please consult this bylaw should you have questions concerning record retention.

Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Freedom of Information Unit has 30 days to respond to your request.

Please note: Applicants seeking motor vehicle collision and proof of loss reports should not make a Freedom of Information request. Please see this page for information about obtaining copies of police reports.
