THE THEFT PROJECT NETS OVER $150,000 IN RECOVERED STOLEN PROPERTY AND 172 ARRESTS IN THE CITY OF VAUGHAN

Posted on Wednesday April 24, 2024

With 358 charges laid against 172 people and over $150,000 worth of stolen property recovered, members with the York Regional Police #4 District Community Oriented Response have made a significant impact on organized retail crime in Vaughan.

Working in collaboration with Vaughan Mills, the Retail Council of Canada and retail loss prevention officers, the Theft Project began on December 6, 2023. The primary objective was to reduce financial losses for retailers within the community, while enhancing security and addressing retail crime.

Shoplifting has transitioned from sporadic, small-scale theft to a highly organized criminal enterprise contributing to monetary losses in the billions and threatens the safety and security of our community members for both retailers and consumers.

High-risk retail locations were identified based on historical data as well as intelligence provided by retailers, police data and current cases. The Theft Project remains an ongoing initiative.

Charges include:

  • Theft Under $5,000 x186
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 x103
