Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit have charged a suspect in connection with five bank robberies dating back to 2012.

On Thursday, January 15, 2026, at approximately 2:20 p.m., police responded to a robbery at a bank in the area of Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road. When they arrived, officers learned a male suspect entered the bank armed with a firearm and made threats before fleeing the scene with a quantity of currency.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, officers identified a suspect. DNA evidence recovered from the scene also linked the suspect to four bank robberies committed in February 2012, by the “Southbound Bandit.”

The suspect had been seen around the scene without a mask and investigators believe there may be additional witnesses who have not yet spoken to police. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators.
