Report Lost Property
About lost property reports
York Regional Police allows lost property incidents to be reported online. Submitting a report creates a record that may assist police in identifying and returning property if it is recovered.
Who is this for?
This service is intended for individuals who have lost property in York Region and want to document the incident.
You may report lost property online if:
- The incident occurred in York Region
- The property has been lost
- There are no suspects or investigative leads
- The incident does not require police response
When not to use this service
Do not file this report if:
- Your property was stolen
- You know or suspect who took the property
- The incident requires investigation or police attendance
In these cases, report a crime online or contact 1-866-876-5423.
What to do
Confirm the item is lost
Before submitting a report, check with friends, family members, businesses or anyone who may have been present when the item went missing.
Identify the type of property
Some items can be reported as lost property online, while government-issued documents, permits and licence plates may need to be reported to the issuing institution first.
Report stolen items separately
If the item was taken rather than misplaced, submit the appropriate theft report instead of a lost property report.
Submit your lost property report online
If the item qualifies as lost property, complete the online report to help police identify and return it if it is recovered.
What should be reported?
Lost property
Lost property can be reported to York Regional Police in the hope of returning items to their rightful owners. Before reporting, contact anyone who may know where the item was lost or left behind.
Stolen property
If your property was stolen, rather than misplaced or left behind, you should not use the lost property process. Submit a theft report or a theft from a vehicle report instead.
Accessible parking permits
Accessible parking permits are issued by the provincial government. If you lose your permit, you should visit the ServiceOntario website for replacement information. If the permit was stolen from your vehicle in York Region, call the non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423 or attend the police district where the theft occurred.
Government-issued documents
If you lose government-issued identification or immigration documents, report them to the appropriate institution as soon as possible to help prevent identity theft. In Ontario, items such as birth certificates, driver’s licences and health cards should be reported to ServiceOntario. If the identification or documentation was lost or stolen in York Region, complete the Lost or Stolen Official Document Form and bring it to your nearest police district.
Passports
Lost Canadian passports should be reported to Service Canada. If a passport was stolen in York Region, complete the Stolen Passport Form and bring it to your nearest police district.
Social Insurance Number cards
Lost or stolen SIN cards should be reported to Service Canada. A new SIN is only issued if the current one is being used fraudulently.
Licence plates
Licence plates are issued by the provincial government. If you lose a plate, replacement information is available through ServiceOntario. If your plates were stolen from your vehicle in York Region, call the non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423 or attend the police district where the theft occurred.
