#5 District Quarter Two Priorities
Quarter 2 Operational Priorities for #5 District
As we move into Quarter 2, members of #5 District remain focused on keeping our community safe through proactive policing, prevention, and community engagement. Based on current trends and community concerns, our top operational priorities for this quarter are:
Road Safety
Road safety continues to be a key focus across the district. Officers will be conducting increased traffic enforcement and education initiatives aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviours, including:
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Impaired driving
The goal is to make roads safer for all users — drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders alike. Residents are encouraged to slow down, stay alert, and report dangerous driving when it is safe to do so.
Break and Enters
Preventing break and enters remains a priority as we continue to respond to incidents affecting homes and businesses within the district. Officers are increasing patrols in targeted areas and working closely with investigative units to identify offenders.
Remember the 6 steps to prevent a break and enter:
- Use technology: Install security cameras and put indoor and outdoor lights on timers
- Clean up the yard: Cut back trees, shrubs and anything blocking the view of entrances
- Shut it down: Close, lock and secure all doors and windows
- Don't make it obvious: Store valuables somewhere unexpected
- Won't you be my neighbour? Know your neighbours and have them watch your home
- Help us help you: Register on the York Regional Police Security Camera Registry
Distraction Thefts
Distraction thefts continue to impact vulnerable members of the community, particularly seniors. These incidents often involve suspects using deception to distract victims before stealing valuables such as wallets, jewelry, or bank cards.
Remember the 6 steps to prevent distraction thefts:
- Be cautious of unexpected encounters
- Don’t let strangers into you personal space, and do not let them touch you
- Don’t accept jewelry or gifts from strangers
- Don’t leave your purse, wallet or handbag unattended, in a shopping cart or in your car, and keep pockets and zippers closed.
- Avoid carrying unnecessary credit cards or cash with you
- Don’t leave expensive purchases in your car – bring them directly home
If something feels suspicious, trust your instincts and contact police.
