York Regional Police launched awareness efforts focused on preventing auto theft, bringing together members from across the province to discuss crime prevention strategies and initiatives aimed at keeping communities safe.

“At the end of the day, we all want to keep ourselves, our families and our properties safe and secure,” Deputy Chief Kevin McCloskey said. “At York Regional Police, we believe crime prevention is a shared responsibility, and while police may take the lead, citizens have the chance to play a significant role in preventing crimes from occurring.”

Here are six steps to help protect your vehicle from auto theft:

  1. Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle.
  2. Install a GPS-tracking device or kill switch.
  3. Invest in outdoor cameras for your home.
  4. Use a steering wheel lock.
  5. Lock your vehicle and store key fobs in a Faraday bag.
  6. Park in a closed and locked garage, if possible.
