York Regional Police was honoured to welcome Dr. Siyabulela Mandela to the York Regional Police Community Safety Village.

Dr. Mandela, the great-grandson of Nelson Mandela, is an activist, human rights scholar and peacebuilder.

During his visit, Dr. Mandela participated in a discussion with members of York Regional Police on policing and human rights.

Question: What is your perspective on the role of policing through the lens of human rights?

Answer: Police don’t only exist to maintain law and order. They stand as a bridge between humanity, between chaos, peace and harmony.

The structures of governance that exist in society can only function as a result of the order and harmony that police help to maintain, as they bridge order, harmony and chaos.

People would not be able to enjoy their human rights without a bridge that enables the wheel of justice to move closer to the people.

So, police are, in my view, a cornerstone of society in general.
