Deputy Chief Hammond holds the signed 30Forward Document

York Regional Police is among the police services in Ontario to sign the 30Forward pledge.

The 30Forward initiative is designed to address challenges and opportunities for women in law enforcement across Canada.

The initiative calls on police leaders to make measurable, actionable commitments to recruit, retain and advance women in policing, while fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace culture.

“York Regional Police has committed publicly to transparency and examining systemic barriers that exist for women in policing,” Deputy Chief Cecile Hammond said.

Deputy Chief Hammond noted the importance of the initiative, citing research that shows women in policing contribute to improved public safety outcomes.

“Female officers use less excessive force, they receive fewer public complaints and there are better outcomes for victims of crime,” she said.

Inspector Kelly Chester, the program’s executive sponsor, encouraged women to pursue a career in policing.

“The advice I would give women is to apply now. You are ready,” Inspector Chester said. “We will provide you with the tools and knowledge you need to be an officer on the road.”

Deputy Chief Hammond echoed those remarks, encouraging women to recognize the value they bring to the profession.

“Being yourself is what we are looking for,” she said. “We value everything you bring as a woman in this profession.”
