Strengthening our diverse communities
York Regional Police serves one of the most diverse communities in Canada, with more than 1.2 million residents speaking 120 languages and representing more than 230 ethnic origins.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bureau and the Hate Crime Prevention Unit work together to support community safety, strengthen relationships and address hate-related incidents across York Region.
Diversity and Cultural Resources Unit
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bureau focuses on community engagement and relationship-building throughout the year. Officers work closely with residents, community leaders and organizations to build trust and support inclusive policing initiatives.
The bureau engages with communities through:
- Community outreach and education
- Visits to places of worship
- Cultural and faith-based events
- Interfaith and multicultural initiatives
- Ongoing collaboration with community partners
These efforts help strengthen communication and ensure York Regional Police remains connected to the diverse communities it serves.
Hate Crime Prevention Unit
The Hate Crime Prevention Unit investigates hate crimes and hate-motivated incidents reported in York Region.
Investigators work closely with victims, community members and partner organizations to:
- Investigate hate-related incidents
- Support affected individuals and communities
- Identify trends and emerging concerns
- Promote awareness and reporting
The unit works alongside the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bureau to support a coordinated, community-based approach to addressing hate incidents.
