The Public Safety Unit brings together specialized teams that support York Regional Police in managing large-scale events, emergencies and complex public safety situations.
From planning and coordination to on-the-ground response, the unit works behind the scenes to help ensure public safety across York Region.
Responsibilities
The Public Safety Unit is responsible for coordinating police response and planning in situations that require specialized expertise, including:
- Emergency management and preparedness
- Demonstrations, protests and labour disputes
- Crowd management and public order
- Search and rescue operations
- Planning for major events
These functions help ensure that both planned and unexpected events are managed safely, consistently and in collaboration with partners.

Emergency management
Supports preparedness and response to emergencies by coordinating planning, training and collaboration between police, government and other public safety partners.
Demonstrations, rallies and protests
Facilitating safe, lawful public gatherings while balancing public safety and individual rights and freedoms.
Search and rescue
Provides specialized support to locate missing persons and assist in evidence searches.
Crowd management
Plans and manages police response to large gatherings to help maintain public safety and order.
Special events
Works with partners and organizers to prepare for and manage safe events, while minimizing impact to communities.
Critical incident support
Provides specialized support during critical incidents, helping coordinate response, resources and communication.
