Public Warning of Overnight Thefts from Vehicles

Following a re-emergence of overnight thefts, York Regional Police is reminding residents to take precautions when leaving valuables in unattended vehicles.

In recent incidents, suspects have been observed overnight in Newmarket neighbourhoods between Bathurst Street and Leslie Street and Mulock Drive and Green Lane. The suspects approach vehicles parked on streets and in driveways, entering unlocked vehicles and stealing valuables.

Thieves commonly target cash, wallets, credit and bank cards and other small items of value.

This type of theft occurs all across York Region.

York Regional Police would like to remind citizens to be cautious and protect themselves by following these tips:

  • Always lock your vehicle, make sure the windows are rolled up and never leave keys behind
  • If you have a garage, park inside it and lock the vehicle as well as garage doors
  • Keep your vehicle in a well-lit area 
  • Consider installing security cameras
  • Don’t leave anything valuable, including identification, wallets or cash inside unattended vehicles.
  • If you witness any suspicious people or activity, or are a victim, contact police immediately

Criminals are opportunists. Do not give them the opportunity to make you a victim of crime.
