Governing the Police Service

Police Service Board

The York Regional Police Service Board provides independent civilian oversight of the police service on behalf of the community. It sets priorities, approves budgets, hires and oversees police leadership, and monitors performance.

This helps ensure policing reflects community needs and remains accountable to the public.

Leadership and Operations

Executive Leadership Team

The Chief of Police and leadership team manage people and resources, implement Board direction, and operate within policy and provincial legislation to ensure the safety and well-being of the community and our members.

Legislation, Authorities and Independent Oversight

Community Safety and Policing Act

Establishes the legal framework for policing in Ontario, including roles, responsibilities, and standards. Sets requirements for oversight, accountability, and service delivery.

Special Investigations Unit

Conducts independent investigations into incidents involving police that result in serious injury, death, firearm discharge, or allegations of sexual assault. Determines whether there is evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA)

Receives and manages public complaints about police conduct, policies, and services. Ensures complaints are reviewed fairly and in accordance with provincial legislation.
