Report a Motor Vehicle Collision
York Regional Police allows certain motor vehicle collisions to be reported online. This option is available for non-emergency incidents where police do not attend the scene.
Before starting your report, you must contact police to determine eligibility and obtain an incident number.
When to call 9-1-1
Call 9-1-1 if your collision involves:
- Any injuries
- A criminal act, such as impaired driving
- A pedestrian or cyclist being struck
- A commercial vehicle over 11,000 kg
- A vehicle transporting dangerous goods
- A public transit vehicle
Call first to obtain an incident number
You must call 1-866-876-5423 to determine eligibility and receive an incident number before starting your online report.

When can you report online?
This service is intended for individuals involved in a non-emergency motor vehicle collision in York Region.
You may report your collision online if:
- The collision occurred in York Region
- Police are not required to attend the scene
- You have obtained an incident number
Please note:
- Collisions on 400-series highways (e.g., 400, 404, 407, 427) must be reported to the Ontario Provincial Police
- Collisions involving damage under $5,000 do not need to be reported unless they meet emergency criteria
How it works
Call police to obtain an incident number
Contact 1-866-876-5423. A police communicator will confirm eligibility and assign an incident number. Share this number with other involved motorists.
Gather required information
Collect all required documents and photos before starting your report.
Complete the online report
Submit your report within 72 hours of the collision. You will have 60 minutes to complete the form.
Receive follow-up
You should receive a response within three business days. Police may contact you if additional information is required.
What you need to report
Have the following ready:
- Incident number
- Date, time and location of the collision
- Driver and vehicle information
- Description of the incident
- Email address
You will also need to upload:
- Photos of the damage or collision scene (up to 6 images)
- Driver’s licence
- Insurance slip
- Vehicle ownership
File requirements:
- PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF
- Maximum 3 MB per file
Before you start
- Reports must be submitted within 72 hours of the collision
- The form will time out after 60 minutes and information will not be saved
- Gather all documents and details in advance, including information from other drivers if available
After you submit your report
- You will receive a response within three business days
- An officer may contact you if more information is required
- You will receive a Driver Information Exchange Form
Updating your report
Reply to the reporting officer by email to provide additional information. The officer will update your report and contact you if clarification is needed.
Charges and investigation
Collisions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. An officer may contact you if charges are considered.
Provide as much detail as possible, including witness information or dashcam footage.
If the collision involves a criminal offence, such as impaired driving, do not submit an online report. Call 9-1-1.
Damage and insurance
Police do not assess damage. This is handled by your insurance provider.
York Regional Police does not notify your insurance company or submit reports on your behalf.
Accessing your report
Copies of police reports are not provided directly. Requests must be made through the Freedom of Information Unit.
Additional information
- Online reports are the same as reports completed in person
- You may use an online translation tool to assist in completing your report
