As teens spend more time online, with friends, and navigating new environments, understanding how to stay safe and make informed decisions is essential.
Practical tips and resources help teens recognize risks, build confidence, make safe choices, and know when and how to reach out for help—while also supporting parents and caregivers in having open, informed conversations about safety.
Personal Safety
- Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions like your phone when walking alone.
- Trust your instincts — if a situation feels unsafe, leave and get to a safe place.
- Stick with friends when possible, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas.
- Share your plans with a parent, caregiver or trusted friend.
Online safety
- Keep your personal information private, including your location, school and phone number.
- Think before you post — what you share online can have long-term consequences.
- Don’t respond to messages from people you don’t know or trust.
- Report and block anyone who makes you uncomfortable.
Social situations
- Never leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers.
- Have a plan to get home safely, including backup options.
- Look out for your friends and speak up if something doesn’t seem right.
