a road sign indicates that CCTV cameras are in use.

To support crime prevention, improve investigative capabilities and enhance community safety, York Regional Police has expanded its Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Community Camera program across the region.

Police use CCTV footage to investigate and solve crimes when criminal activity is reported in the area.

The cameras are strategically placed to enhance public safety and monitor only publicly accessible areas. They are restricted from recording private dwelling spaces.

Equipped with automatic licence plate reader technology, the cameras help police identify and locate stolen vehicles.

Footage captured by these cameras is retained for 72 hours, unless it is required in connection with an investigation.
