Over the past year, the rapid growth and ongoing development of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) has presented both opportunities and challenges for York Regional Police.

When the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Substation was developed, York Regional Police recognized that keeping the area safe and secure would require a new approach—one that prioritizes prevention, strengthens community connection and engagement, and remains both efficient and adaptable.

The substation also provides an opportunity to pilot innovative policing approaches and assess their effectiveness before broader implementation across York Region.

To address the VMC’s high population density and compact footprint, York Regional Police launched a Neighbourhood Policing Team focused on proactive, relationship-based policing. The team works closely with residents, businesses and stakeholders to support early intervention and collaborative problem-solving.

York Regional Police is also advancing an integrated Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) initiative in partnership with local businesses and stakeholders. During emergency situations, this collaboration allows officers to access camera footage to support coordinated responses and assist investigations.

This integrated approach helps support timely response, strengthen public safety and maintain a secure and vibrant neighbourhood.

Through innovation, collaboration and community partnership, these initiatives reflect a continued shift toward proactive, solution-oriented policing in the VMC.
