Investigators with the York Regional Police Financial and Organized Crimes Unit are thanking the public and the media for their assistance in locating a 49-year-old Richmond Hill man charged in connection with frauds targeting Spanish-speaking car buyers.

Between January and May 2026, York Regional Police investigated a suspect who posed as a licensed vehicle salesperson and posted advertisements on social media aimed at Spanish-speaking new Canadians.

The suspect met victims in person and showed them vehicles which were either in the possession of legitimate dealerships or advertised online. He then obtained their financial information and accepted cash down payments before ceasing communication with the victims.

Investigators believe the accused used industry contacts to help facilitate the frauds, including borrowing office space to meet with victims.

Duglas RODRIGUEZ, 49, of Richmond Hill, has been charged for Fraud Under $5,000, False Pretence, Theft Under $5,000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.

Investigators are releasing the suspect’s image as they believe there may be additional victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
