Experienced officer selection process
Once you submit your application, here's what you can expect to happen:
Application review
After you submit your application, we review it in detail. If you move forward, we assign your file to a recruiter, who will be your main contact throughout the process.
Interview
When a class of experienced officers is confirmed, the Uniform Recruiting Unit schedules interviews with selected candidates. After interviews, the strongest candidates move to the background investigation stage.
Police background investigation
We verify the information you provided in your application, along with any additional information you share during the selection process.
Psychological evaluation
All experienced officer candidates must complete both an online and in-person psychological assessment to help determine suitability for the role. The psychologist’s assessment is confidential.
Conditional offer
If approved, we forward your name to the Police Services Board for final approval. We then make a conditional offer of employment, subject to successfully completing a medical examination with an approved physician.
Training exemptions
If you trained in Ontario
If you graduated from the Ontario Police College, you are exempt from recruit training.
If you trained outside of Ontario
If you completed a Canadian police recruit training program that is comparable to the Ontario Police College program and approved by the Ontario Police College, you must write the Ontario Police College exemption exam.
To write the exam, you must already be in the selection process. You must also pass the exam to be considered by York Regional Police.
The exam covers:
- Provincial law
- Use of force
- The Highway Traffic Act
Approved police recruit training programs
If you graduated from one of the following Ontario Police College-approved programs, you are eligible to write the exemption exam:
- Atlantic Police Academy
- British Columbia Justice Institute
- Calgary Police Service
- École nationale de police du Québec
- Edmonton Police Service
- Saskatchewan Police College
- Winnipeg Police Service
If you trained anywhere else in Canada, you must complete the Ontario Police College recruit program.
If you trained outside of Canada
York Regional Police welcomes applications for police constable positions from people living outside Canada. International applicants must meet the same requirements as applicants in Canada, including being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
York Regional Police does not provide sponsorship.
Conditions of employment
Conditions of employment for experienced officers making the move to York Regional Police.
Annual leave
In your first year of employment with York Regional Police, you earn 15 vacation days (120 hours), pro-rated based on your hire date. We also recognize your years of service, which may increase your vacation entitlement.
Assignment
Experienced officers are assigned to a district and platoon based on the needs of the service. We will attempt to accommodate an applicant's request for a particular posting; but there is no guarantee that the request can be met. New members should be prepared to work from any police district in York Region.
Benefits
York Regional Police offers an exceptional, comprehensive benefits package, which new hires benefit from on the first day of employment.
Classification
Experienced hires are credited with previous police experience when determining their starting classification at York Regional Police. We review each experienced officer’s classification on a case-by-case basis. If you have worked for more than one agency, we combine all employment experience.
Education
When approved, York Regional Police offers reimbursement of 80 per cent of eligible tuition costs, up to a lifetime maximum of $7,500.
Pension plan
All York Regional Police members must contribute to the OMERS pension plan. If you have contributed to another pension plan, contact OMERS to determine if your plan is transferable.
Seniority
Seniority is based on the date you are sworn in as a police constable. We do not recognize seniority from other police services. Previous years of service are considered when determining vacation entitlement and premiums.
