An officer conducts radar enforcement near a stop sign in a neighbourhood

The kids are headed back to school, which means the roads, and sidewalks, are about to be much busier.

York Regional Police is reminding drivers, pedestrians and parents to Always Be Careful in school zones.

Whether you’re cycling, skateboarding, riding, walking or driving, road safety in our school zones is everyone’s responsibility.

If you’re a pedestrian:

  • Always use sidewalks and crosswalks
  •  Look both ways and only cross when the roadway is clear
  • Be visible and indicate the direction you are crossing
  • Don’t run or cycle when crossing a roadway
  • Make eye contact with drivers so you know they see you

If you're a driver:

  • Reduce your speed and be prepared to stop at all times
  •  If you are dropping children off, ensure they exit on the passenger side
  •  Be extra cautious in or near school parking lots
  • Always stop for school buses with lights and stop signs activated

Remember to be alert, patient and follow the rules of the road.

Thanks for doing your part to keep York Region roads safe for everyone.
