Suspect Charged for Residential Break and Enter in Markham

Investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a suspect in relation to a residential break and enter in the City of Markham.

On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at approximately 6:50 a.m., police responded to the report of a break and enter in progress in the area of Old Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East. The suspect had entered the residence through an unlocked sliding door, but was scared off when confronted by the homeowner.

Police learned the suspect had unsuccessfully attempted to gain access to at least two other residences in the area.

The suspect was arrested and charged on November 26, 2025.

York Regional police is releasing a photo of the suspect as investigators believe there may be additional victims. Anyone with information is encourages to come forward. 

Charged:

  • Nishanth SELVARATNAM, 36, of the City of Markham

Charges:

  • Break and Enter with Intent
  • Trespass at Night x2
  • Breach of Probation

At the time of the incident, SELVARATNAM was on probation for unrelated offences.

The investigation is ongoing and investigators anticipate laying additional charges.
