The Community and Well Being members establish and maintain partnerships within the community, engaging our citizens according to our shared values.

The Community Engagement and Well Being Bureau consists of several units:

Auxiliary Unit

Auxiliary officers participate in parades, fairs and other community events. They are also trained to assist in emergencies, like natural disasters and searches for missing people or evidence.

While auxiliary officers do not carry firearms, they are fully trained in the use of firearms and must qualify annually like uniform officers. The unit, now more than 30 years old, has a rich tradition of community service and its members receive no payment or remuneration for their work.

Mental Health Resources Unit

Members in the Mental Health Resources Unit work to increase awareness in the community around mental health issues and support people dealing with mental health challenges with the hope of decreasing hospitalization and apprehension.

Senior Safety Unit

Senior safety officers provide presentations across the region, hoping to prevent telephone scams, frauds and elder abuse, among other crimes that target seniors.

York Regional Police also hosts two Seniors Academies yearly and Seniors Day in June, allowing us to connect with seniors to discuss a range of topics including crime prevention, criminal activity relating to seniors, traffic and pedestrian safety and the Crime Stoppers program.

Members of YRP are proud to participate in committees such as:

  • BASSIC (Bringing an Awareness of Senior Safety Issues to the Community)
  • PEACYR (Prevention of Elder Abuse Committee of York Region)
  • LEAPS (Law Enforcement Agencies Protecting Seniors)
  • Community Support Rounds-Health Link
