Riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) can be an exciting way to explore the outdoors, but it also comes with serious risks if proper precautions aren’t taken. Each year, preventable accidents lead to injuries and fatalities—many involving riders who underestimate the importance of safety practices.
Whether you’re a seasoned rider or new to ATVs, understanding and following key safety guidelines is essential to protect yourself and others.
Safety Tips
The following tips are designed to help you ride responsibly and make every trip a safe one.
Always wear protective gear
Under the Highway Traffic Act, you must wear an approved helmet
Cary a cell phone with you
Make sure you have a fully charged cell phone with you.
Let someone know where you are going
Always let someone know where you are planning to go and when you will be back.
Know where you can and can't ride.
Police can charge riders driving on highways and rights-of-way under the Highway Traffic Act, Section IV Reg. 316/03.
Ensure your ATV is ready to ride
Ensure your ATV has a valid permit and is properly licensed and insured.
Know the laws
Children under 12 are not permitted to drive an ATV except on land occupied by the vehicle's owner.
