What is a Criminal Record Check?

A Criminal Record Check (CRC) is the most basic of the three standard police record checks used in Ontario. It confirms criminal convictions and is commonly required for employment, licensing, immigration and other general screening purposes.

This check is not intended for positions involving children or other vulnerable persons.

Who is this check for?

A Criminal Record Check is intended for individuals who require basic screening for employment, licensing or other general purposes where only criminal convictions are required.

Examples may include positions in retail, financial institutions, municipal licensing, and applications related to travel or immigration.

How to apply

Confirm the required check

Confirm with the employer or organization that a Criminal Record Check is required.

Submit your application online

Complete your application using electronic identity verification through Equifax eIDVerifier. You will be required to answer financial verification questions. This is not a credit check and does not affect your credit score.

Enter your information accurately

Ensure your name, address, date of birth and personal information are entered correctly prior to submission.

Complete identity verification

If your identity cannot be verified electronically, you will be required to attend in person. Notification will be provided by email.

Attend in person if required

Applicants under 18 who are volunteering or seeking employment with a government agency are not eligible to apply online and must attend in person. Applicants requiring fingerprinting must also attend in person.

Receive your results

If eligible, results will be delivered electronically. If in-person pickup is required, it is typically available within 7 to 10 days from the date of application.

What is included

A Criminal Record Check will include the following information as it exists on the date of the search:

Criminal convictions from Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and/or local police databases
Summary convictions, where identified, for five years
Convictions where a records suspension has been granted, if authorized under the Criminal Records Act or another act or regulation.

Fees

* Fees are subject to change. Fingerprinting may be required to confirm identity. A fee of $122 will apply. No refunds will be issued once an application has been submitted.

Processing times

York Regional Police representatives aim to complete record checks within 7-10 business days.

Processing times may be longer if an applicant is required to attend for fingerprinting, if responses are pending from the RCMP or another policing agency, or during periods of high application volume.

For applicants whose identity cannot be verified online, additional time is required to process and deliver the completed police record check to the designated pick-up location.
