Statement on Impaired Driving Conviction in Travis Gillespie Death

Posted on Monday October 27, 2025

On behalf of York Regional Police, I wish to acknowledge today’s verdict in the impaired operation trial of Mr. Haoju Zhou, arising from the collision that claimed the life of Constable Travis Gillespie.

Travis was killed on his way to work on September 14, 2022, in the City of Markham. Three years later, Travis remains deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. Our thoughts are with the Gillespie family as they continue to mourn a life taken far too soon.

Earlier today, we learned that the driver will face consequences for the senseless actions that resulted in Travis’ death, when he was found guilty of dangerous operation causing death and impaired operation causing death. He remains on bail pending sentencing, scheduled for January 16, 2026.

We are pleased with this result, and grateful to all who played a role in delivering justice for Travis in the wake of his death.

I am especially grateful for members of the Peel Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit for their professionalism and dedication in conducting this complex investigation. Your work contributed to securing this conviction and has helped bring the Gillespie family, along with his friends and colleagues at York Regional Police, one step closer to closure.

Thank you also to our community for the overwhelming support shown throughout these proceedings. Together, let’s continue to honour Travis’ memory by contributing to safer roads and a safer York Region for us all to enjoy.

Chief Jim MacSween
